Writing Room

The well-lighted room at the east end of the hall was added to the house to provide Ellen White with a work area. It measures 18 x 20 feet (5.5 x 6.1 meters). The large windows afford a view of the valley which was a source of inspiration and pleasure.

Centered on the east wall, a fireplace provided warmth and cheer. Much of the west wall was taken up with shelves and cabinets to accommodate her library, manuscripts and writing materials.

The writing chair, with its convenient lapboard attached, stood near the windows where the light was good. A comfortable broad-armed rocking chair next to the fireplace, a day bed, and other chairs, and a custom-built filing cabinet standing by the fireplace completed the furnishings. An inconspicuous door at the north corner opened to the narrow stairs down to the back entrance hall, providing ready access to family and staff.

On awakening in the early morning, Mrs. White came to this room to begin her work. If there were coals left in the fireplace from the banked fire, she uncovered them, put on a little kindling and wood, spent some time with God in prayer, and then began her work.

As she entered this room at noon on Saturday, February 13, 1915, she fell and fractured her hip. She spent the last few months of her life in this room, in a hospital bed. In this room, two days before her death on Friday afternoon, July 16, 1915, she closed her lifework with her last words, "I know in whom I have believed."
